Around the office, we call Tom the iceman. He’s prepared ice planning studies, designed new arenas, renovated old arenas, coached his son’s hockey team, taken photos from the stands, served as officer of a local hockey association, and talked hockey with anyone who is interested. But Tom is about more than just ice; he’s also about a common sense approach to design and construction. His skill for decluttering the design and construction process and been prized by many civic, commercial and healthcare clients.

Tom gets his straight-forward approach, in part, from his upbringing on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He’s a Yooper — a term for UP natives that was included in the Merriam Webster dictionary in 2014, via the dogged efforts of one UP resident. Although the entry just says “a native or resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan — used as a nickname,” it implies resourceful, hard-working, community-minded people. That’s Tom.
